ICF is presenting a film programme in Hong Kong on Fri 18th & Sat 19th Jan (6:00 - 8:45 PM) in the Prison Yard of the Tai Kwun Art Centre.
The programme brings together works by six international artists that address certain geopolitical, historical, cultural and economic relationships between specific cities and places. It explores narratives of global connections and exchange through the films of Larry Achiampong, Madiha Aijaz, Iván Argote, Mohau Modisakeng, Amie Siegel and Sam Smith.
Sam Smith’s film Lithic Choreographies examines the geological history of the Swedish island of Gotland, Larry Achiampong uncovers fragments of the forgotten empire of the United Kingdom in Relic 1, and Madiha Aijaz’s These Silences Are All The Words takes its lead from a series of conversations held in the Bedil Library in 2017, examining a range of topics in Pakistani history and culture. Mohau Modisakeng meditates on the types of migration to and from South Africa in his work Passage, Iván Argote digs an imaginary channel from Indonesia to Colombia in As Far As We Could Get, while Amie Siegel’s film The Architects moves through various architecture studios in New York City, gazing uncompromisingly at the highly networked production of global architecture.
The programme is part the project Migrating Cities curated by Jessica Taylor and Gabria Lupone of the ICF and commissioned by Chelsea College of Arts for the UAL Global Pavilion at Tai Kwun.
Sam Smith’s exhibition at Gotland Art Museum expands the research conducted during his visits to Gotland in 2017 and 2018 while producing his new film, Lithic Choreographies (2018). The film, which occupies the center of the exhibition, blends historical data and speculative science fictions to chronicle different chapters in the story of the island’s geological strata. Working with locals to ground his investigations within the communities and landscapes of Gotland, Smith seeks to re-imagine our modes of engagement with and contributions to ecological assemblages.
Lithic Choreographies was commissioned by International Art Space for spaced 3: north by southeast and produced in collaboration with Baltic Art Center.

Organised by the WA-based International Art Space, spaced 3: north by southeast brings together 11 artists from Australia and the Nordic region.
Artistic explorers of a different kind are celebrated in spaced 3: north by southeast. Six Australian artists completed artistic residencies in the Nordic heartlands of Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden and five Nordic artists find their place in Western Australia’s rural and remote communities. Using sculpture, video, photography and installation, this show is an enlightening series of windows onto the world we know, and the world we have yet to understand.
The decision to place artists in regional and remote locations is motivated by the fact that even small and seemingly isolated towns are affected by global economic, environmental and social forces. The interplay between the strong sense of local identity, which is typical of these communities, and the effects of globalisation provides a fertile ground for artists to explore.

Sam Smith will undertake a multi-stage residency at Baltic Art Center in Visby, Sweden as part of the Spaced 3: north by southeast programme run by International Art Space
Spaced 3: north by southeast is a program centred on an artists’ exchange between Nordic and Australian visual artists. The program will span three years (2016-18) and constitute the core of the third iteration of spaced, a recurring international program of context-responsive art, presented by International Art Space (IAS).
Spaced 3: north by southeast will comprise 12 residency-based projects that will take place in regional, remote and outer-urban locations in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Western Australia. Nordic artists will undertake their residencies in Western Australia, whilst Australian artists will be placed in the Nordic region. These residencies are positioned as the means to develop new works that will be created by each artist in response to their engagement with the social, environmental and historical contexts of the host communities.
